Machine Learning for Computer Security

Good and bad times with machine learning and security research

Two Research Positions at TU Berlin.

I am happy to announce the availability of two research positions at Technische Universität Berlin. For our new project PROSEC, we are looking for two PhD students with interest and expertise in network security and machine learning.

Research area: The project is concerned with the security of IP-based communication and involves developing novel techniques for protecting services, devices and infrastructures from unknown attacks. For this purpose, proactive concepts from computer security, such as honeypots, are coupled with machine learning techniques for automatically detecting, analyzing and preventing network threats. The project has a running time of three years and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Requirements: The candidates should have a strong background in network security, network attacks and communication protocols, as well as good knowledge of machine learning and statistics. A university degree in computer science, mathematics or a related area is required.

The official announcement is available here (in German). Note that the deadline for applications is 1st of May. If you have any questions regrading these positions and the project, feel free to send me an email.

EC2ND 2011 - Call for Papers

After hosting the conference in the last year, I am happy to announce the new call for papers for the 7th European Conference on Computer Network Defense (EC2ND). The conference is organized by Chalmers University of Technology and will take place in September 2011 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

EC2ND 2011 invites submissions presenting novel ideas in field of computer and network security with the intention to act as a discussion forum for promising, innovative research. This year we are especially interested in papers concerning the protection against attacks in "special environments" (such as the ICT component of the smart grid) and protection against attacks that could cause a large societal impact.
  • Submissions due: July 4th, 2011
  • Acceptance notification: 4 August, 2011
  • Final papers due: 19 August, 2011
  • Conference dates: 6-7 September, 2011
More information are available at the conference website. A PDF version of the call for papers is available here.
